New drum'n'bass mix! Done with (Ableton) Live 7, since I picked it up this past week. I'm still puzzled as to why I'd never mixed with it prior (as I've only produced a bit with it before), since it's basically the greatest thing ever. Really versatile, intuitive program.

So this one's a long time coming... I've been mixing a lot lately, though just haven't gotten around to recording anything. There've been tons of new releases since my last mix, including Pendulums (mediocre) new album 'In Silico', Evol Intent's 'Era Of Diversion' LP, as well as various Lifted artist EP's and singles. Tons of great stuff so far in 2008. As the tracklist so blatantly reflects, I'm reeeeaaaally into the new Apex EP that just promo'ed this week. It's being called some of the best dnb of the decade by critics - remarks I can't disagree with. These tunes will be smashers for years to come.

Even after going out of my way to make sure I blog more about stuff I make or create, I still continue to suck at it. Or rather, I suck at blogging in general, really. Ohhhhhhhhhhh well. It feels like I've said it before, but if you really want to know what's going on with me, calling, texting, IMing, or emailing me does the trick. I swear I'll reply. Calling will most likely yield the best result. ;)

So, yeah. Another product of a lazy Sunday in March, this one just seemed natural. My favorite MJ song with one of the hottest hiphop/r&b beats in recent memory. I wish I could find a better quality acapella, but this is all the internet had to offer, legally or otherwise. :|

Ohayoo!

So, not much to say really. Life's life. Yadda yadda. Lots changed and still changing since last post, etc etc. Busy busy.

But I still find time in the day to get down with the sickness and rock the funky beats. Observe:

Quick 'n sloppy preview clip mix of some material I've been working on. Everything's au naturale, produced and engineered by me. Ain't no premade loops in there. And, of course, everything's a work in progress, and don't pay any attention to the composition of anything because it's all just slapped together carelessly. That phatness 1/3rd of the way through (tentatively named Trick Dog), I just started it a couple of nights ago; not even adequately realized, yet but it's thumpin' and delicious enough to preview. A couple are kind of dated, and I should prooooobably go back and overhaul them. Might even be able to get a couple done in time to drop at fanime.

Oh yeah! I'm spinning at the fanime dance. No idea when though. Come... check it... out? I feel a bit wrong asking anyone to actually go to fanime on their own free will... but I assume a good portion of you reading this are already going, so... yeah! Go to the dance, foolies.

Trunk Gaming

Black Friday was epic. Ngo and a handful of the usual suspects from last year's outing were in attendance towitness the miracle of camp-out gaming... in Mike Ngo's trunk. If there was better way to spend my time sitting on my butt out in 40 degree weather all night in Sunnyvale anticipating impending doom, I sure as heck didn't spend enough time thinking of it.

As always, it was basically just for the experience and not so much for the consumer whoring. Well, ehh... mostly - I made away with a set of Logitech 5.1 THX speakers for $50 and 500 gigs worth of external HD goodness for $80 after rebates, which compared to last year, was pretty much awesometastic. And at this rate, I'll theoretically be up to 2.5 TB by the time next BF rolls around... ayaa. Somebody suggest me more useless crap to download so I don't feel guilty with hundreds of unused gigs.

Santa's new digs

Keeping on the pointless-standing-in-line tip, Anthony, his friend and I made it to Santa Ramen's grand re-opening this past Saturday. I'll tell ya, not many things in this world can get me motivated enough to wake up before the crack of noon on a Saturday, but for keeping my fandom true and business continuously contributed to my favorite restaurant, I would've given up a winning lotto ticket. Honestly dude. My loyalty runs deep.

Whilst fighting off the urge to slice the throats of all the "friends" of the first party in line cutting with them (which is more intricately documented within my Yelp review), the feeling was that of everything I was expecting it to be - the same crack-in-a-bowl deliciousness even God himself could not deny, now served within finer ambiance and a sleeker decor. Everything consumable is more or less the same, as it should be. The only changes, outside of a slight price hike, are just more kinds of sprinkles on the icing on the cake. We almost went again for dinner, hahaha.

Other than that... ehh. Not too much else interesting to dwell on, I guess. Life's been going as great as it could be. Still unrelationship'd, so nothing to report on that front. Maybe soon though. I think I'm pissing off some other people more than I am myself about not caring... yeesh.

I'm liking my new living arrangements for the most part. I'm saving a good chunk of scratch on commuting by living within walking distance of a Caltrain station and a T-line stop. Also getting more into the music producing thing, bit by bit. I think I'm almost regretting not taking the LA job opportunity, but don't let me fool you just yet ;D... I'm really just getting jealous of the LA dnb scene and not being able to brock out with Devon in it. I've got nobody here that shares the same affinity for the scene nearly as much as I do, and it being probably my most major hobby now, it's a kick in the nuts going alone to clubs in the bay to see dj's rinse out. Sigh.

Yeesh, this is getting scattered. Oh! One more thing... I might actually be moving to Tokyo sometime in the near future. I'm not letting myself get too excited or anything... but it might as well be the coolest thing ever. =D Hooray for possibly un-borifying Keina!

Song Share: who's producin'? eh-eh-eeedit

Straight Heat

    As mentioned previously, a taste of glitch hop. edIT's "Straight Heat", off of his sophomore album Certified Air Raid Material.

    Truth be told, I've maintained and defended a 'meh' stance on hiphop/rap (mostly due to figuring they were the same thing) until this year. After finally going through a lot of ATCQ, Eazy, Biggie, basically all of NWA, etc. and giving them a chance, I discovered how much less retarded they are/were compared to the trash being put out these days. Lyrically, at least. Musically... eh, it's hit or miss for me. Musicality in hiphop has never been anything I've had much appreciation for -- which should be no surprise to those who know me -- as it's obviously not meant to be the spotlight of the tracks, rather the lyricism instead. Now before hurling bricks, I'm not at all saying it's bad, but me... well, my ears are trained and conditioned to listening to tracks that somebody's given more than an hour's worth of engineering work on, along with some actual depth and variety (something 95% of hiphop has always lacked according to my ears) to the layers and instrumentation. It's hard to argue against saying production value -- even on the crunky, hyphy, toilet flush beats these days -- has increased with the times, though. Advancements in audio production technology since the days of the greats have come a dime a dozen, and while some still can't find their way around a proper drum cut, the vast majority seem to get things right.

    That being said, after listening to as many sides of the hiphop spectrum I could possibly find, I've finally found what I've been looking for out of the genre: glitch hop. Heavy hitting basses, meticulously cut 'n spliced synths and dancefloor killing melodies fusing under glitchy vfx samples and verses reminiscent of the days when a track didn't have to be about multiple bank accounts, mile-high rims or pimping hoes to sell records comprise the sub-genre's infectious and, for lack of a quainter term, badass sound. With actual production value that not only exceeds my expectations, but a fresh sound that I can actually dig and find myself listening to for hours on end, as well.

QotD: WGA Strike

Film & TV writers are on strike, which means everything except reality TV could halt production. Do you support the strike? Are any of your favorite shows in jeopardy?

Seeing as the showrunner and more than half of the cast is participating in the strike, I'd say I'm pretty much insurmountably pissed that The Office won't see production until the strike is over.

The last new episode will supposedly air on November 15th, and after that... well, Godspeed, NBC.

Armin van Buuren No. 1 DJ on DJ Mag top 100 2007

Albeit how little I am into trance these days, Armin van Buuren is, has been, and probably always will be be my favorite face in trance music since first hearing his tracks over 7 years ago. If anybody has ever truly put an all-encompassing face onto what good trance music is, it's him. From most anyone's perspective within the scene, he's single-handedly molded the genre into what it is today, launching it into new directions and shattering boundaries, while others sitting on top did next to nothing but recycle the same boring sound over and over again for a quick buck.

A true pioneer. A man who does it for the music, still, after all these years. I couldn't be happier for him.
