Ohayoo!
So, not much to say really. Life's life. Yadda yadda. Lots changed and still changing since last post, etc etc. Busy busy.
But I still find time in the day to get down with the sickness and rock the funky beats. Observe:
Quick 'n sloppy preview clip mix of some material I've been working on. Everything's au naturale, produced and engineered by me. Ain't no premade loops in there. And, of course, everything's a work in progress, and don't pay any
attention to the composition of anything because it's all just slapped
together carelessly. That phatness 1/3rd of the way through (tentatively named Trick Dog), I just started it a couple of nights ago; not even adequately realized, yet but it's thumpin' and delicious enough to preview. A couple are kind of dated, and I should prooooobably go back and overhaul them. Might even be able to get a couple done in time to drop at fanime.
Oh yeah! I'm spinning at the fanime dance. No idea when though. Come... check it... out? I feel a bit wrong asking anyone to actually go to fanime on their own free will... but I assume a good portion of you reading this are already going, so... yeah! Go to the dance, foolies.
Nap time. Payce.
As mentioned previously, a taste of glitch hop. edIT's "Straight Heat", off of his sophomore album Certified Air Raid Material.
Truth be told, I've maintained and defended a 'meh' stance on hiphop/rap (mostly due to figuring they were the same thing) until this year. After finally going through a lot of ATCQ, Eazy, Biggie, basically all of NWA, etc. and giving them a chance, I discovered how much less retarded they are/were compared to the trash being put out these days. Lyrically, at least. Musically... eh, it's hit or miss for me. Musicality in hiphop has never been anything I've had much appreciation for -- which should be no surprise to those who know me -- as it's obviously not meant to be the spotlight of the tracks, rather the lyricism instead. Now before hurling bricks, I'm not at all saying it's bad, but me... well, my ears are trained and conditioned to listening to tracks that somebody's given more than an hour's worth of engineering work on, along with some actual depth and variety (something 95% of hiphop has always lacked according to my ears) to the layers and instrumentation. It's hard to argue against saying production value -- even on the crunky, hyphy, toilet flush beats these days -- has increased with the times, though. Advancements in audio production technology since the days of the greats have come a dime a dozen, and while some still can't find their way around a proper drum cut, the vast majority seem to get things right.
That being said, after listening to as many sides of the hiphop spectrum I could possibly find, I've finally found what I've been looking for out of the genre: glitch hop. Heavy hitting basses, meticulously cut 'n spliced synths and dancefloor killing melodies fusing under glitchy vfx samples and verses reminiscent of the days when a track didn't have to be about multiple bank accounts, mile-high rims or pimping hoes to sell records comprise the sub-genre's infectious and, for lack of a quainter term, badass sound. With actual production value that not only exceeds my expectations, but a fresh sound that I can actually dig and find myself listening to for hours on end, as well.
Check out edIT and the rest of The Glitch Mob on Myspace for more hotness.
Yeah, I know I haven't blogged in forever lately, as some have noted. Aporogies!
Honestly, nothing has stricken me as blog-worthy much lately... I've not been home as much as usual these past few weeks, and since my blogging is usually the result of a blinding case of boredom at home, the equation's evidently been broken.
Tonight was awesome though. Went through old cd's and had a goot laugh at everything I found my old case (NOW #1!!!). But one cd in particular basically JUMPED out of it's fitting and into my dvd drive wanting to be ripped.
I DON'T REMEMBER!
realized I've been neglecting trance for a long time. the releases I've been meaning to share have been piling up for quite a while now... hahaha.
tracklist -
- Mike Shiver & Marc Damon - Water Ripples (Mike Shiver's Introduction Mix)
- Mark Pledger - On The Edge (Mike Shiver's Catching Sun Mix)
- Mike Shiver - Morning Drive
- Will Holland - Frantic (Sean Tyas Remix)
- Lange vs. Gareth Emery - Another You Another Me
- Vadim Zhukov - Talking To A God (Probspot Remix)
- Above & Beyond - Can't Sleep
- BT - Somnambulist (Mark Norman Remix)
somewhat of a Shiver overload in the beginning, but he really is the producer of the moment in trance. for me, at least. profound sound. =p and that somnambulist remix is actually brand new -- recently released just this month. too good to pass up.
going back and listening to my first few trance mixes, and now listening to this one... amazing. can't believe how much I've progressed (and how I thought I was actually decent back then). beatmatching, overlaps, EQing, track flow selection... everything improving. good times. =p
I completely forgot I had my copy of Light Grenades shipped here to work... quite a pleasant surprise. :D Even if the leak has been out since two Saturdays ago...
Shipped a day ahead of release to boot! Time to make 320 rips... hehe.
Oh man... this is getting me all anxious. Can't wait till January! I was lucky enough to bank in on ticket pre-orders last Tuesday, and scored a floor ticket to the Warfield show. :)
I...
NEED
...mp3s of the Wii interface music.
Best ambience EVER.
Stunning. Eizinger was really telling the truth when commenting that Light Grenades sounds like "13 different songs by 13 different bands."
The title track... meh. Not feeling it yet. Hopefully that'll change.
Only a couple more weeks! =)
Can't exactly sleep. Guess it's what I get for letting myself take a 3 hour nap in the middle of the day, yeah? Bleh... but it felt sooooooo good at the time.
Meh...
So, my musical tastes have been far from EDM-ish lately, which hasn't happened in a good amount of time. DNB has had more good releases lately than I know what to do with, which... is basically OD'ing me. I go through genre phases quite sporadically, but I've been feeling mildly detached from the usual trance and dnb listening. I've brought myself into a downtempo, lounge-y acoustic feeling recently which, if the past patterns itself correctly into the present and future, usually signals that I'm going through a bit of inner changing. Go figure! Seems about right. =p
My interest in José González (and acousticly minimal style in general) piqued after watching him open/perform with Zero 7 a few weeks ago at the Fillmore. He absolutely stole the show for me, even covering Massive Attack's Teardrop, earning him the spot as my favorite opener ever. I'd gladly go and see him perform again, no matter whom with or without. Something about his voice over the progressive, simplistic acoustic riffs produce an amazing symmetry that, once again, human ears can't exactly explain the greatness of very well, other than the simple explanation that it just... works. Goosebump inducing, if you really sit and listen to it.
And now, just like Etro Anime, it's hard to pick one song from his album 'Veneer' to share, but here's the one that sealed the deal during his act and won me over with goosebumps, shut eyes and an unintentional grin.

Play any instrument or speak any language, which do you choose?
Question submitted by cruftbox.vox.com.
Music is the universal language. So... uhh... learning an instrument is basically learning a language. Know what I mean? It's something everyone can understand... yeah, and screw math, Bryant. I'd much rather have everyone enjoy music than sit down and do their times tables.
Veering off subject, I'd like to get around to learning Japanese. And the piano. And Dutch. And the drums. And Russian. And... the flute.
Word.
But alas, here I am currently enthralled in various other hobbies that deplete my pasatiempo. Couple that with the fact that uhhh... I don't even have much time for the hobbies I actually care to devote time to, I'm close to SOL on these fronts.
OH WELL!
